Great Bear Rainforest
The rainfall in Canada’s Great Bear rainforest did not disappoint. Torrents of constant rain brought a host of challenges both for the operation of equipment and for the water-saturated working conditions. But the rain and clouds also defined and distinguished this beautiful landscape, bringing a range of spectacular lighting changes and textures to the photography.
The diffraction and diffusion of sunlight through clouds and through sheets of rain, the lingering slow-floating mist that lends depth to each frame, the pings of light bouncing off droplets and pools… all of these collisions of water and light lent a distinctive beauty to the rainforest. Truth is for the brief moment we had blue skies and sunshine the forests and lakes seemed to lose some of their mystery, the photography dissolving into chocolate box prettiness and ultra sharp contrast. So while the water-logged going was occasionally arduous, the photographic rewards were rich.
Shooting on Red’s VistaVision Monstro lent a large format majesty to the frames, matched beautifully by Angenieux’s Full Frame 22-60mm and 45-135mm.
